Near Wendlingen is Esslingen am Neckar, a beautifully preserved medieval town with one of the oldest rows of half-timbered houses in Germany, a hilltop castle and a famous Christmas market, well worth a visit. The Swabian Alb rises to the south, with its dramatic escarpment, hilltop castles (Hohenneuffen, Teck) and caves, and Stuttgart with its museums and culture is a short train ride away, all reachable from Wendlingen by car with the green badge or by rail.
