Can You Drive in Venice in 2026? Zero Roads, 2 Car Parks
Venice, Italy · ZTL
No. The historic islands have no roads, so cars stop at Piazzale Roma or Tronchetto. On the mainland, central Mestre is a 24/7 permit ZTL fined from EUR 83.
No — you cannot drive in Venice’s historic city, because the islands carry no roads at all, only canals and footpaths. Every vehicle crossing the road bridge from the mainland stops at one of two terminals, Piazzale Roma or the Tronchetto car park, and from there you continue by vaporetto, water taxi or on foot. Italy’s 50 km/h urban limit and 0.05% alcohol limit apply only on the mainland approach.
Your case: The real decision is where the car sleeps — the dearer Tronchetto and Piazzale Roma garages at the end of the bridge, or cheaper Mestre on the mainland with a short train across — so plan the drive up to that point with Plan My Drive.
This page covers reaching Venice by car. For the mainland zone and access rules, see the Venice ZTL details.
Park at the edge — or in Mestre
Two choices: the Tronchetto/Piazzale Roma car parks right by the city, or a car park in Mestre on the mainland and the train over the lagoon to Venezia Santa Lucia. Mestre’s own centre is a permit ZTL, closed 00:00-24:00 every day behind eight camera gates, so pick a car park outside it; an unauthorised entry is fined EUR 83, or EUR 58.10 paid within five days.
Arriving from Germany, the motorway brings you down over the Brenner and onto the A4 towards Mestre; the Munich to Venice drive sets out the Austrian vignette and the separate Brenner toll you pay on the way.
Then it’s water and feet only
From Piazzale Roma you switch to the vaporetti along the Grand Canal, water taxis, or your own two feet through the alleys. No cars, no bikes. On the busiest spring and early-summer days of 2026 the Comune also charged day-trippers an access fee of EUR 5 booked ahead or EUR 10 at short notice, 08:30-16:00 on 60 set dates between 3 April and 26 July.
When the car helps
Only for the wider Veneto — Padua, Verona, the villas. Park it in Mestre and leave it there while you’re in Venice itself.

Winter tyres in Italy — 2026–27 season
Winter tyres are required in Italy whenever conditions are wintry — 15 Nov - 15 Apr (varies by region and road).
- Tread minimum: 1.6 mm — Italy sets no separate winter figure.
- Accepted marking: M+S / MS / M-S / M&S (3PMSF not required)
- Studded tyres: restricted
- Penalty: €87–345 outside built-up areas, from €42 inside, plus an order not to continue
In Italian the rule is pneumatici invernali, and snow chains are catene da neve — that is the wording on signs, in hire-car paperwork and on any penalty notice.

Frequently Asked Questions
Not into the historic city. The islands are car-free, with canals and footpaths instead of roads. The road bridge from the mainland ends at Piazzale Roma and the Tronchetto car park on the western edge, where every vehicle has to stop. From there you continue by vaporetto (water bus), water taxi or on foot.
Either at the head of the road bridge, in the Piazzale Roma garages or at Tronchetto, which are the closest and dearest options, or on the mainland in Mestre, taking the train over the lagoon to Venezia Santa Lucia station on the Grand Canal. If you park in Mestre, choose a car park outside the central ZTL.
The one you can actually drive into is in Mestre, the mainland half of the Comune di Venezia. Its central ZTL is closed to vehicles without authorisation 00:00-24:00 every day, holidays included, behind eight electronic gates. AVM, the city's mobility company, lists the penalty as EUR 83 plus postal costs, or EUR 58.10 if paid within five days. Since 14 December 2024 repeated entries into the same ZTL on one day count as one violation.
On selected days, yes. In 2026 the Comune di Venezia charged the access fee (contributo di accesso) on 60 days between 3 April and 26 July, from 08:30 to 16:00: EUR 5 if paid in advance, EUR 10 in the last four days before the visit. Overnight guests paying the tourist tax are exempt. The fee concerns visitors on foot, not cars, and the 2027 calendar is set by the council.
No. Venice is reached by train, and inside the city you move by water and on foot; cycling is not allowed in the historic centre. A car is useful only for the wider Veneto, Padua, Verona or the Brenta villas, in which case leave it in Mestre or at the causeway car parks while you visit Venice.
