Valenciennes has no ZFE in force: it is on the state's list of zones still to be created, so no Crit'Air sticker is checked. Park centrally or at the Nungesser park-and-ride by the tram.
Valenciennes has no low emission zone in force. The agglomeration is one of the French territories obliged by law to create a ZFE, but it is missing from the state register of live zones, and the ministry’s map still shows it as a zone to be created. In 2026 that means no Crit’Air sticker is checked in Valenciennes and no ZFE fine can be issued. If you are continuing to Lille, where a ZFE is in force, order the sticker anyway: EUR 5.11 for a foreign-registered car from certificat-air.gouv.fr.

Where to leave the car
The city lists four central car parks: Place d’Armes (562 spaces), Dentellières (380), Arsenal (449, open 24 hours) and Tertiales (220). If you would rather not drive into the centre, the Nungesser park-and-ride has 260 spaces next to a tram stop. France’s rules apply: 50 km/h in towns and a 0.5 g/l alcohol limit, 0.2 g/l for drivers on a probationary licence.
What to see on foot
The Musée des Beaux-Arts on boulevard Watteau is closed for renovation and runs events off-site meanwhile, so check before planning around it. The city’s art history is on show outdoors: the Prix de Rome garden displays work by its laureates, among them the sculptor Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux. Valenciennes also gave its name to a bobbin lace, which the Dentellières car park still recalls.
When the car helps
Keep it for the former mining basin around the city, Lille, and the short drive into Belgium.

Winter tyres in France — 2026–27 season
Winter tyres are required in France whenever conditions are wintry — 1 Nov - 31 Mar (mountain law, designated departments).

In French the rule is pneus hiver, and snow chains are chaînes à neige — that is the wording on signs, in hire-car paperwork and on any penalty notice.
