Winter tyres in France — 2026–27 season
Winter tyres are required in France whenever conditions are wintry — 1 Nov - 31 Mar (mountain law, designated departments).
- Tread minimum: 1.6 mm — France sets no separate winter figure.
- Accepted marking: 3PMSF on all four tyres, or snow chains / snow socks carried for two drive wheels; M+S alone no longer accepted (34 departments, signed communes only)
- Studded tyres: restricted
- Penalty: No sanction in force as of 17 Feb 2026 (penalty decree not yet published). Ignoring a B26 chain sign: 2nd-class fine, up to EUR 150. The obligation is enforceable only where B58/B59 signs are installed.
In French the rule is pneus hiver, and snow chains are chaînes à neige — that is the wording on signs, in hire-car paperwork and on any penalty notice.

Valence sits in the Rhône valley where, as the saying goes, 'à Valence le Midi commence': the climate turns warmer and sunnier and the vegetation more Mediterranean. For drivers heading down the Rhône toward Provence it is a natural stop, with the Vercors and the Ardèche on either side.
Use an underground garage near the centre, then walk. The old town, with the covered stepped passages known as côtes that link its levels, and the Parc Jouvet with its view toward the Vercors, are compact and walkable.
The Maison des Têtes and other Renaissance buildings in the old town, the green Parc Jouvet, its food, and its position as the gateway to the south and to the Vercors and Ardèche. It is a comfortable Rhône city rather than a major tourist hub, pleasant on foot.
Not for the city; the centre is walkable and Valence has a TGV station. A car helps for the Vercors, the Ardèche gorges, the northern Rhône vineyards around Hermitage and the road south into Provence.
