Turin runs two rules on two different clocks. The ZTL Centrale is a permit zone that closes the old Savoy core to unauthorised cars for three hours on weekday mornings; a separate, citywide anti-smog order bans the dirtiest diesels all year and adds more of them each winter, regardless of where you park. The ZTL Centrale — mornings only
Unauthorised circulation and parking are barred inside the historic core 07:30-10:30 on weekdays, Saturdays excluded; outside that window the streets are open. A permit requires the car to be Euro 3 or above (Euro 2+ on LPG or methane). Cameras cover 27 access points around the perimeter plus 11 more inside. If your hotel sits inside the zone, send it your plate before you arrive — registering after the camera has already photographed you is too late.
Park outside, walk the portici
About 18 kilometres of covered arcades, the portici, let visitors walk the centre in any weather, from the grand cafés to the Egyptian Museum. GTT, the city transport operator, runs both metered blue-zone street parking and unstaffed structured garages with automated entry; park in one outside the ZTL boundary and use the metro running beneath the arcades.
Italy’s national limits apply: 50 km/h urban, 0.05% alcohol (zero in the first three years of a licence).
The winter diesel ban — a different problem
This one covers the whole city, not just the centre, and runs on its own calendar under ordinance 2537/2025: petrol and diesel Euro 0-2 are banned every day of the year, and from 15 September to 15 April, diesel Euro 3 and 4 are also stopped on weekdays 08:00-19:00. A Euro 4 diesel with a valid ZTL permit can still be breaking the winter rule on the very same street.
When the car helps
Keep it for the Langhe wine country (Barolo, Alba) and the western Alpine ski resorts, driven out from a central garage.
