Tübingen Still Has No Green Sticker Rule Heading Into 2026
Tübingen, Germany · Umweltzone
Tübingen has scrapped its environmental zone — no emission sticker, permit or low-emission penalty applies today.
Can your car enter Tübingen?
Tübingen abolished its Umweltzone on 4 June 2024, so no green Umweltplakette, permit or emission fine applies to any car driving in today. That clears the way to the postcard riverside row of half-timbered houses on the Neckar, where students still pole traditional Stocherkahn punts past the old town. Park near the centre and explore the steep lanes on foot; the university town rewards walking far more than driving.

Green sticker, park by the river, walk up
Get the Umweltplakette (around EUR 10-12, permanent — German rentals carry one); without it the fine is EUR 100. The steep, half-timbered old town is pedestrian — park in a garage by the river and walk up to the market square and the castle. The Stocherkahn punts drift below. Germany’s limits: 50 km/h urban, 0.05% alcohol (zero under 21 or first two years).
When the car helps
Keep it for the Swabian Alb — caves, castles — and the road toward the Black Forest, driven from a riverside garage. Stuttgart is a short train ride.

Stocherkahn are long, narrow punt boats poled along the Neckar in Tübingen, much like the punts of Cambridge or Oxford, a beloved local tradition especially among students, who race them in an annual event. Drifting along the river past the famous row of colourful houses, with the old town rising behind, is one of the classic Tübingen experiences. It needs no car, and is best enjoyed after parking and exploring the old town on foot.
Barely. The old town is steep, with narrow cobbled lanes of half-timbered houses climbing from the river to the castle, much of it pedestrian and not suited to cars. It's made for walking. Park in a garage at the edge of the old town, by the river, and explore on foot; the market square, the castle and the riverside are all within a compact, if hilly, area.
Use a garage near the river or the edge of the old town, then walk up into the historic centre. The hilly, largely pedestrian old town isn't for driving, so leaving the car below and walking up is the natural approach. From the river, the market square, the collegiate church and the castle with its views are all a short (if uphill) walk away.
