Locally the zone is called Zona a Traffico Limitato Trapani (Italy) — that is the wording on the boundary signs, on the official portal and on any penalty notice, so it is the phrase to search for once you are there.

Trapani keeps cars out of its old town with a permit ZTL, and the one thing the Comune does not give drivers is a timetable: its ZTL page lists no ordinance and no hours, so the sign at each camera gate is the rule you follow. Entry depends on a residency, business or hotel permit rather than your car’s emission class, and an unauthorised pass costs EUR 83 to EUR 332 under the national road code. The simplest plan is to leave the car on the approaches, walk the peninsula, and use the cable car for Erice and the ferries for the Egadi Islands.

Park outside, walk the peninsula
The old town along the spit is small and flat, so parking on the approaches costs less than a single ticket. If you are staying inside the zone, have the hotel register your plate before arrival and keep the written confirmation. Pay a notice within five days and the EUR 83 minimum drops by 30%, to EUR 58.10.
Italy’s general limits apply: 50 km/h in town and 0.05% blood alcohol, with zero tolerance for drivers under 21 and in their first three years.
Cable car, ferries and the salt road
Take the funivia up to Erice, the ferries from the port to the Egadi Islands, and drive the coastal road south through the salt pans and their windmills.
When the car helps
Keep it for western Sicily: the temple at Segesta, the beaches of San Vito Lo Capo and the Marsala wine country, collected from a car park outside the ZTL.

The historic centre on the narrow peninsula is closed to unauthorised traffic and the gates are camera-controlled. Entry depends on a permit (residents, businesses, registered hotel guests), never on your car's Euro class. The comune publishes no ZTL timetable, so read the sign at each varco. Entering without authorisation carries the statutory EUR 83-332 penalty of art. 7 comma 14 of the Codice della Strada.
South of the city, towards Marsala, the coast is covered in salt pans (saline): shallow basins where seawater evaporates and salt is harvested, dotted with old windmills. Part of the area is a protected nature reserve with plenty of birdlife. The coastal road through them, often called the Via del Sale, is a short drive from the centre.
By the funivia, the cable car that climbs from the edge of Trapani to the medieval hilltop town of Erice. It is far easier than the winding mountain road and drops you at the edge of Erice's walled centre. Park near the lower station and ride up; Erice itself is a walkable maze of stone lanes.
Use a car park on the approaches, outside the ZTL, and walk in: the centre is small and flat. For the Egadi Islands, the ferries and hydrofoils leave from the port. If your hotel is inside the zone, ask it to register your plate before you arrive and keep the confirmation.
Not for the old town, Erice (cable car) or the Egadi Islands (ferry). A car is useful for the salt road and western Sicily beyond: the temple at Segesta, the beaches of San Vito Lo Capo and the Marsala wine country, all reached from a car park outside the ZTL.
