Toulon looks, on paper, like the kind of French city that would have a Crit’Air zone: it sits between two that do, Marseille and Nice. But the metropole’s 2020 vote to prepare one never turned into an actual scheme — no perimeter was drawn, no start date was set, and the national register of low-emission zones has no entry for Toulon. Drive in as you would anywhere unrestricted, park in a garage near the harbour, and walk the market-filled Provençal old town.

No sticker to buy, a cable car instead
There is nothing to order and nothing to display. Park in a central garage and walk the old town behind the harbour-front, where a daily market runs through narrow Provençal streets. The Téléphérique du Mont Faron climbs from the city to a viewpoint over the harbour and a memorial to the 1944 Provence landings — the more relaxed way up than the narrow summit road.
When the car helps
Keep it for the Var coast — the Bandol wine country and the road toward Hyères and Saint-Tropez — driven out from a central garage. For the Îles d’Hyères (Porquerolles), take the ferry from the port instead of the car.

Winter tyres in France — 2026–27 season
Winter tyres are required in France whenever conditions are wintry — 1 Nov - 31 Mar (mountain law, designated departments).
- Tread minimum: 1.6 mm — France sets no separate winter figure.
- Accepted marking: 3PMSF on all four tyres, or snow chains / snow socks carried for two drive wheels; M+S alone no longer accepted (34 departments, signed communes only)
- Studded tyres: restricted
- Penalty: No sanction in force as of 17 Feb 2026 (penalty decree not yet published). Ignoring a B26 chain sign: 2nd-class fine, up to EUR 150. The obligation is enforceable only where B58/B59 signs are installed.
In French the rule is pneus hiver, and snow chains are chaînes à neige — that is the wording on signs, in hire-car paperwork and on any penalty notice.

No. Toulon Provence Méditerranée agreed in February 2020 to work towards a low-emission zone, but no arrêté has ever brought one into force, and Toulon is absent from the government's register of ZFEs in effect. Nothing is checked and no sticker is required to drive into the city.
There is no published perimeter or start date. The 2020 commitment funded a preliminary study through ADEME, but the metropole's own site carries no ZFE page, and the project has not moved beyond that first step in over five years.

A narrow road also climbs the mountain, but parking in the city and taking the cable car is the easier option.
