The weekend ZTL
Access depends on a permit or residency, checked by plate cameras at the gates; the panel at each gate shows the hours in force. Without authorisation the national penalty applies: EUR 83 to 332 under article 7 of the Codice della Strada, and since 14 December 2024 repeat camera entries into the same zone on the same day count as one violation. On a Saturday afternoon, park outside the restricted streets and walk in to the coral and cameo workshops and the seafront.

When the car helps
The town sits on the lower slopes of Vesuvius, within the Vesuvius National Park area, and a car makes the road up the volcano simple. For Herculaneum and Pompeii, the Circumvesuviana railway stops at Ercolano Scavi and Pompei Scavi, which spares you parking at the sites.
