Taormina clings to a cliff terrace above the Sicilian coast, its ancient Greek theatre framing Mount Etna and the sea beyond. The ZTL protecting the centre is a permit and barrier system rather than one based on emission class, and parking at the top is scarce, so most drivers leave the car at the Lumbi or Porta Catania car parks below town. A cable car then links the centre down to the beach at Mazzarò.

Park below, walk up
The centre is a permanent ZTL with Corso Umberto I largely pedestrianised, cameras and mobile barriers, and entry for permit holders only. Your car’s Euro class makes no difference: a driver without a permit is fined EUR 83-332 under the national Highway Code. If your hotel is inside the zone, ask reception to register your plate before you drive in. Otherwise use Lumbi (with a shuttle to the centre) or Porta Catania (a short walk in), and arrive early in summer when they fill. Italy’s limits on the approach: 50 km/h in town and 0.05% alcohol, with zero for drivers under 21 and in their first three years.
Cable car to the beach
A funivia links the cliff-top town to the beaches at Mazzarò and Isola Bella, far easier than driving the switchbacks.
When the car helps
Keep it for eastern Sicily: Etna, the baroque Val di Noto, Catania and Siracusa, driven out from a car park below the town.

Hotel guests are among the exemptions, but only once the hotel has registered your number plate. Ask reception before you arrive and do not drive through a gate until they confirm it.
In one of the car parks below the centre, usually Lumbi, which has a shuttle up, or Porta Catania, a short walk from the old town. Parking inside the town is scarce, and the car parks can fill on summer days, so arrive early.
The Teatro Antico is an ancient Greek theatre, rebuilt in Roman times, set into the hillside so that its ruined stage frames Mount Etna and the Ionian Sea. It still hosts summer concerts and is a short walk through the pedestrian centre from the car parks.
Not for the town itself: park below, walk the centre and use the cable car to the coast at Mazzarò. A car helps for eastern Sicily, from Mount Etna to Catania, Siracusa and the baroque towns of the Val di Noto.
