Tampere’s low emission zone exists only as a plan for now — no sticker, permit or fine applies to any car driving in today, though a future scheme would need Euro 5 diesel or Euro 4 petrol. Finland’s headlights-on and 0.05% alcohol rules already apply on the roads in. The lakeside centre along the Tammerkoski rapids, reborn from red-brick industry into museums, is flat, walkable and served by a new tram line.

This page covers driving around Tampere. For the zone specifics, see the Tampere LEZ details.

Is There a Low Emission Zone in Tampere?

No. Planned; fine not yet set.

Park, walk or tram the lakeside centre

The planned LEZ will restrict older cars (check current rules before driving in), but the compact centre along the Tammerkoski rapids is flat and walkable, with a new tram. Park in a garage and walk or ride. Finland’s rules: 0.05% alcohol, headlights on always, mandatory winter tyres in season, 50 km/h urban.

When the car helps

Keep it for the Finnish Lakeland — the lakes, forests and cottages — and the road north toward Lapland, driven from a central garage. Helsinki is a short train ride.

Winter tyres in Finland — 2026–27 season

Winter tyres are required in Finland whenever conditions are wintry — 1 Nov - 31 Mar (can be extended by conditions).

  • Legal winter tread minimum: 3 mm — not the 1.6 mm figure most guides quote, which is the year-round minimum.
  • Accepted marking: 3PMSF required on non-studded winter tyres (since 1 Dec 2024)
  • Studded tyres: allowed

In Finnish the rule is talvirenkaat, and snow chains are lumiketjut — that is the wording on signs, in hire-car paperwork and on any penalty notice.

Frequently Asked Questions

There is no low-emission zone in Tampere. Planned; fine not yet set. You do not need a sticker or permit for emissions here.

Check emission zone requirements

Use a central garage or a park-and-ride and walk or take the tram in. The compact centre, strung along the Tammerkoski rapids that link the two lakes, is flat and walkable, and Tampere now has a modern tram line through the city. Parking once and exploring on foot or by tram is the natural way around the centre.

Plan your trip costs including parking

Tampere has more public saunas than any other city, including historic wood-fired ones like Rajaportin sauna, the oldest working public sauna in Finland, and lakeside saunas where you can cool off with a dip in the water. Sauna is central to Finnish life, and Tampere celebrates it more than anywhere, which is part of the city's relaxed, lake-and-steam character. You don't need a car to enjoy them — they're in and around the walkable city.

Finland's rules: a 0.05% alcohol limit, dipped headlights required at all times day and night year-round, and a 50 km/h urban limit. Winter tyres are mandatory in winter conditions (roughly December to February, and often longer), essential given Finland's snowy, dark winters. Speeding fines can be income-linked and very high. These apply across the country and on the roads into Tampere.

Not for the city — the compact lakeside centre is walkable, with a tram, and Tampere is a short train ride from Helsinki. A car helps for exploring the Finnish Lakeland around it — the lakes, forests and summer cottages — and for heading further north toward Lapland, driven out from a central garage rather than used in the compact centre. Remember winter tyres and headlights in season.
