Park outside, walk the medieval centre
Access is by permit, and since April 2026 permits are applied for online. Off-season hours differ, so the sign at the gate you are crossing is the binding reference. Park outside and walk to Piazza Garibaldi, the aqueduct and the confetti shops. Italy’s limits: 50 km/h in towns, 0.05% alcohol, zero for drivers in their first three years.
When the car helps
Keep it for the surrounding Abruzzo: the Majella and Gran Sasso national parks, the high plateaus, the hermitages and the mountain roads, driven from a car park outside the ZTL.

Sugared almonds, made in Sulmona for centuries and traditionally given at weddings. Shops in the centre shape them into bouquets and flowers of coloured sweets. It is the town's signature craft, all within walking distance.
A medieval aqueduct with a row of pointed arches runs along one side of the main square, Piazza Garibaldi. It is one of the town's emblems and the backdrop to its markets and processions.
Outside the ZTL, then walk into the medieval centre. In season, remember that the evening closure runs until 01:00, so a late return to a hotel inside is still within the restricted hours unless the hotel has registered your plate.
Not for the compact centre. A car is useful for the Majella and Gran Sasso national parks, the high plateaus and the mountain roads, driven from a car park outside the ZTL.
