The old town, a UNESCO World Heritage site together with Wismar, sits on an island between the Strelasund and ponds. It has the brick-Gothic churches of St Mary, St Nicholas and St James, the town hall with its gabled facade, the harbour with the museum ship Gorch Fock I, and the Ozeaneum aquarium of the German Oceanographic Museum.
