Spoleto’s steep historic centre is a permit-based Zona a Traffico Limitato, with unauthorised-entry fines up to around EUR 160, but few visitors need to test it. Park in the car parks at the foot of the hill and ride the town’s escalators and covered walkways up to the Rocca Albornoziana fortress, skipping both the climb and the zone. From the top, walk down past the cathedral to the Ponte delle Torri, a medieval bridge-aqueduct roughly 80 metres above the gorge.

Spoleto climbs a hillside, and the easiest way into the centre is to park in the car parks at the bottom and use the series of escalators and covered walkways (the percorsi meccanizzati) that carry you up through the town to near the top, by the Rocca Albornoziana fortress. It's one of the great sights of Umbria, reached on foot from the upper town, a short walk from the top of the escalators.
The Festival dei Due Mondi (Festival of Two Worlds) is a renowned international arts festival of music, theatre, opera and dance held in Spoleto each summer, usually late June into July, filling the town's piazzas, churches and the Roman theatre with performances. During the festival the town is busy and parking is in demand, so arrive early and use the car parks below with the escalators up, rather than attempting to drive into the centre.
