Spoleto closes its steep historic centre to cars without a permit, and the hours change by zone and by season: in summer 2026 the A1 section was restricted round the clock while zone A kept its own schedule. The sign at each gate is what counts. Entering without authorisation costs EUR 83-332, and since 14 December 2024 repeat entries into the same zone on one day count as a single violation.

Park below, ride the escalators up
The town solves the climb with mechanised walkways. Park at Ponzianina, where escalators climb towards the Rocca Albornoziana, or at the Spoletosfera car park, opened in 2008 under Buckminster Fuller’s sculpture. From the top, walk down past the cathedral to the Ponte delle Torri, a medieval bridge-aqueduct about 80 m high and 230 m long. Italy’s limits: 50 km/h urban, 0.5 g/l alcohol, zero for drivers under 21 and in their first three years.
When the car helps
Keep it for Umbria: the Marmore Falls and the roads to Assisi and Perugia, driven from a car park below the town.

Park at the foot of the hill and use the mechanised walkways. The Ponzianina escalators climb towards the Rocca Albornoziana, and a second route runs from the Spoletosfera car park, opened in 2008 beneath Buckminster Fuller's sculpture.
The medieval bridge-aqueduct is about 80 metres high and 230 metres long, crossing the gorge below the Rocca Albornoziana. It is reached on foot from Piazza Campello along Via del Ponte.
Not for the town. A car helps for the rest of Umbria: the Marmore Falls, Assisi and Perugia, driven from a car park below the centre. Spoleto is also on the rail line.
