Sheffield sits right on the edge of the Peak District, and for a visiting driver the city’s real challenges are its famously steep hills and keeping to the left. The Clean Air Zone inside the inner ring road is real, but it is Class C: it charges older taxis, vans, buses and lorries, and private cars and motorbikes pay nothing, whatever their age. Park in a garage or at a Supertram stop and let the tram take the steepest stretches.

The CAZ skips cars, the hills don’t
Non-compliant taxis, private hire vehicles and vans pay GBP 10 a day and buses, coaches and HGVs GBP 50; an unpaid charge becomes a GBP 120 penalty, halved to GBP 60 if paid within 14 days. A big campervan is the one visitor vehicle worth checking. Drive on the left, roundabouts clockwise, and expect gradients. In built-up areas the default UK limit is 30 mph (48 km/h) unless signed otherwise.
When the car helps
Sheffield’s great asset is the Peak District on its western edge: the moors, the gritstone edges and Chatsworth, driven out from a central garage.
