Santa Cruz de Tenerife's Zone Isn't Live Yet in 2026

Santa Cruz's Zona de Bajas Emisiones classifies vehicles by Spain's DGT environmental labels and restricts the most polluting ones, with fines around EUR 100-200 for non-compliant entry. Spanish and Spanish-registered hire cars display a DGT sticker; foreign-registered cars don't, so check the city's current rules on foreign-plate access before driving into the centre. The compact, walkable centre means parking on the edge and walking is the easy approach.

The Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is one of the largest and most spectacular carnivals in the world, often said to be second only to Rio de Janeiro, held in February with elaborate costumes, the election of a carnival queen in extravagant gowns, music, dancing and huge street parties for days on end. During carnival the city is packed and at its most exuberant, so plan accommodation and avoid driving in the centre. The rest of the year it's a relaxed, sunny port city.

Use an underground garage near the centre or the waterfront, then walk. The compact centre, the Plaza de España, the shopping streets and the seafront with its striking Auditorio de Tenerife are walkable. Street parking is limited and partly restricted by the ZBE, so a central garage is the easy choice, with a hire car kept for touring the island.

By car (or organised tour). Mount Teide, the volcano at the heart of Tenerife and the highest peak in Spain, rises in the centre of the island within the Teide National Park, a dramatic landscape of lava fields and craters reached by scenic mountain roads, with a cable car carrying visitors near the summit. A hire car is the best way to reach the park and drive its roads, driven out from Santa Cruz; the high altitude means it can be cold and snowy up top even when the coast is warm.

Not for the city — the compact centre and waterfront are walkable, with trams and buses for the rest (including the historic town of La Laguna nearby). A car is genuinely useful for touring Tenerife — Mount Teide and its national park, the beaches, the resorts and the villages — driven from a central garage rather than used in the ZBE-bound centre.
