Santa Cruz de Tenerife’s Zona de Bajas Emisiones now exists in law but not yet on the road. The ordinance’s initial approval was published in BOP nº 56/2026 on 11 May 2026 and its definitive approval in BOP nº 101/2026 on 24 August 2026. Asked whether fines start on day one, the city says no: a long familiarisation period comes first. No DGT label is checked at the boundary today and no fine applies.

Where the zone will run
The approved perimeter covers about 778,000 m² across El Toscal and Centro, with calle Méndez Núñez, the Rambla de Santa Cruz and Avenida de Anaga as the main boundary streets. Once sanctions begin, access will depend on working days, pollution levels and vehicle type. Spanish towns default to 30 km/h on streets with one lane each way and 50 km/h on wider ones; the alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, 0.3 for novice drivers.
Park, walk the centre and waterfront
Park near the centre or the seafront and walk to the Plaza de España and the Auditorio de Tenerife, Santiago Calatrava’s concert hall, opened in 2003. The carnival, around February, is among the largest in the world and fills the centre for days.
The car’s real job: Teide and the island
Keep the car for Teide National Park. Teide, at 3,715 m the highest peak in Spain, rises in the middle of the island; the cable car leaves from near km 42.8 of the TF-21 and climbs above 3,500 m. Trams link the historic town of La Laguna.
