Daytime visitors can drive straight up to San Miniato: the comune closes Zone A of its hilltop ZTL only from 21:00 to 05:00 on working days and from 16:00 to 05:00 on holidays, and adds Zone B from 21:00 to 01:00 through July while the Dramma Popolare is playing. The rule is a permit, never your Euro class, and an unauthorised entry costs EUR 83-332. Park below the ridge and walk up to the Rocca tower; in November the white truffle fair takes over the town.

The centre is also pedestrianised on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays (15 August excepted), so on those days leave the car below whatever the hour. Repeated camera entries into the same ZTL on one day now produce a single fine. Italy’s limits: 50 km/h urban, 0.05% alcohol (zero for drivers under 21 or in their first three years).
When the car helps

The comune publishes Zone A as closed from 21:00 to 05:00 on working days and from 16:00 to 05:00 on holidays. Zone B is added from 1 to 31 July, 21:00 to 01:00, during the Dramma Popolare performances. The historic centre is also pedestrianised on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, except 15 August. Outside those windows you may drive up.
Entering without authorisation is fined under article 7 comma 14 of the Codice della Strada: EUR 83-332, 30% less if paid within five days. Since 14 December 2024 repeated entries into the same ZTL on one calendar day count as a single violation (article 198 comma 2-bis). Access depends on residency or a permit, never on Euro class.
The hills around the town are prime ground for the white truffle, and San Miniato holds its national white truffle market-fair on the weekends of November, when the centre fills with stalls and restaurants put truffle dishes on the menu. Expect the evening ZTL and busy car parks on those weekends.
The Rocca, a tall brick tower on the highest point of the ridge, is linked to the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II. It was destroyed in the Second World War and rebuilt afterwards, and the climb to it gives views over the Arno valley between Florence and Pisa.
Not for the hilltop town, which is walkable once you have parked. A car helps for the surrounding truffle and wine country and the towns between Florence and Pisa. The railway station, San Miniato-Fucecchio, is in the valley on the Florence-Pisa line.
