No Crit’Air sticker is needed and no ZFE fine applies. The Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyards here built the liners Normandie and France and now construct some of the world’s largest cruise ships, and a colossal wartime submarine base on the waterfront today houses museums.

No sticker, park and walk
Drive in, park near the centre and walk to the shipyard tours, Escal’Atlantic and the submarine base. If your trip continues to Nantes, check its ZFE before you go. France’s limits: 50 km/h urban, 0.05% alcohol.
When the car helps
Keep it for the coast — the resort of La Baule, the salt town of Guérande, the Brière marshes and the Loire estuary — driven from a central car park.

Winter tyres in France — 2026–27 season
Winter tyres are required in France whenever conditions are wintry — 1 Nov - 31 Mar (mountain law, designated departments).
- Tread minimum: 1.6 mm — France sets no separate winter figure.
- Accepted marking: 3PMSF on all four tyres, or snow chains / snow socks carried for two drive wheels; M+S alone no longer accepted (34 departments, signed communes only)
- Studded tyres: restricted
- Penalty: No sanction in force as of 17 Feb 2026 (penalty decree not yet published). Ignoring a B26 chain sign: 2nd-class fine, up to EUR 150. The obligation is enforceable only where B58/B59 signs are installed.
In French the rule is pneus hiver, and snow chains are chaînes à neige — that is the wording on signs, in hire-car paperwork and on any penalty notice.

The Chantiers de l'Atlantique yard built the transatlantic liners Normandie and France and today builds some of the world's largest cruise ships. Shipyard tours and the Escal'Atlantic liner museum, run from the waterfront, show how the giant ships are assembled.
During the Second World War the German navy built a huge concrete U-boat base on the waterfront. It survived the bombing that destroyed much of the town, and the 1942 British commando raid on the great dry dock took place alongside it. Today the base houses Escal'Atlantic, exhibition spaces and a rooftop viewpoint.
A car park near the town centre or the waterfront puts the submarine base, the seafront and the shipyard tours within walking distance. No emission sticker is needed to drive into the centre.
Not for the centre and waterfront, and Saint-Nazaire has a station on the line to Nantes. A car helps for the coast around it: the beach resort of La Baule, the walled salt town of Guérande and its marshes, the Brière regional park and the Loire estuary.
