Can your car enter Rimini?
Rimini is two places at once: a vast Adriatic beach resort, and a Roman old town holding the Arch of Augustus, the 2,000-year-old Tiberius Bridge and the legacy of native son Fellini. Two different rules touch drivers. The historic centre’s camera-enforced ZTL admits permit holders only, and an unauthorised entry costs EUR 83-332. Separately, from 1 October to 31 March the regional anti-smog rule stops diesel cars up to Euro 4 and petrol cars up to Euro 2 on weekdays, 08:30-18:30.

The winter rule for older cars
Rimini is in Emilia-Romagna’s Pianura Est air-quality zone, so the structural limits apply from 1 October to 31 March, Monday to Friday 08:30-18:30: diesel to Euro 4 and petrol to Euro 2 stay off the road in the built-up area, and Euro 5 diesels join them on ecological Sundays and during emergency measures. Electric and hybrid cars, and car-pooling with three or more people, are exempt.
Two Riminis, two parking strategies
For the old town, park outside the ZTL and walk in; if you pass the same gate twice in a day, article 198 c.2-bis of the Highway Code counts one violation. For the beach, use the resort-strip car parks, busy and paid in summer. Italy’s limits: 50 km/h in town and 0.05% alcohol, zero for drivers under 21 or in their first three years.
When the car helps
Keep it for the Republic of San Marino just inland, the hill towns and the wider Riviera. In summer the seafront jams, so allow time.

Winter tyres in Italy — 2026–27 season
Winter tyres are required in Italy whenever conditions are wintry — 15 Nov - 15 Apr (varies by region and road).

An unauthorised entry costs EUR 83-332 under article 7 of the Highway Code; since 14 December 2024 the same zone on the same day brings one fine. The seafront Parco del Mare ZTL runs daily in summer.

Not for the city, where the beach, old town and station are walkable or a short bus ride apart, and Rimini is on the main Adriatic rail line. A car helps for San Marino, the hill towns and the wider Riviera.
