Reggio Calabria does not run a classic daytime ZTL. The Polizia Municipale closes named streets by ordinance, and the scheme the comune published, ordinance no. 438 of 2 August 2022, ran from 20:00 to 02:00 the next day. That reverses the usual visitor logic: you can reach most streets in the afternoon and find the same street closed after dinner. Entry without authorisation costs EUR 83-332.

Arrive by day, then walk
Plan the last leg to your accommodation for daylight and leave the car where it can stay overnight. The ordinance lets in police and rescue vehicles, CUDE disabled-badge holders, buses, taxis and residents with a transit permit; visitors are not on that list, so the sign at the street decides. Since 14 December 2024 repeat entries into the same zone on one day count as one violation, and paying within five days cuts the minimum by 30%.
From any car park near the centre, the lungomare, the palm-lined seafront often called the most beautiful kilometre in Italy, faces Sicily across the strait. The National Archaeological Museum holds the Riace Bronzes, two classical Greek bronze warriors recovered from the sea off the Ionian coast. Italy’s rules: 50 km/h in towns, 0.5 g/l alcohol, zero for drivers under 21 and in their first three years.
When the car helps
Keep it for the Aspromonte mountains and the coasts. Most car ferries to Sicily leave from Villa San Giovanni, a short drive north; passenger fast boats link Reggio itself with Messina.
