Prato's ZTL A is closed to every vehicle 24 hours a day, whatever the fuel; Zone B closes 07:30-18:30. Entry is by permit only, the fine is EUR 83-332, and inside ZTL A the limit is 10 km/h.
Locally the zone is called Zona a Traffico Limitato Prato (Italy) — that is the wording on the boundary signs, on the official portal and on any penalty notice, so it is the phrase to search for once you are there.

Prato runs two restricted zones. In ZTL A the comune bans every vehicle all day, every day, regardless of fuel, “benzina, elettrico, ibrido”, and where a permit lets a car in, the speed limit is 10 km/h. ZTL B closes 07:30-18:30. Driving in without a permit costs EUR 83-332, and since 14 December 2024 repeat entries into the same zone on one day count as one violation.

Park outside, walk the walled centre
Use the pay-and-display car parks around the historic centre; blue-line spaces can be paid by text message. If you genuinely need to drive in, temporary permits are issued online, at the Consiag Servizi Comuni office or, for type T, at the local police station. On foot, start at the Cathedral of Santo Stefano: Filippo Lippi began his fresco cycle of the Stories of St Stephen and St John the Baptist in 1452, and Donatello and Michelozzo designed the outdoor pulpit from 1428. The Emperor’s Castle, built after 1240 for Frederick II, is free to visit every day except Tuesday, and Palazzo Datini shows how the medieval “Merchant of Prato” lived. Italy’s limits: 50 km/h in towns, 0.5 g/l alcohol, zero for drivers under 21 and in their first three years.
A base near Florence
Prato Centrale sits on the Bologna-Florence and Florence-Lucca lines, Porta al Serraglio is the station closest to the old town, and a bus runs to Florence Santa Maria Novella every 15 minutes through the day. The A1 and A11 motorways both pass the city, so the car is useful for the Tuscan countryside.
