Park outside, walk to the bridge
Park outside the ZTL and walk the compact centre to the Ponte Coperto and the riverside. Hotels inside can register your plate. Repeated entries into the zone on one day now count as a single violation. Italy’s limits: 50 km/h urban, 0.05% alcohol (zero for drivers under 21 or in their first three years).
The car’s job: the Certosa
Keep the car for the Certosa di Pavia just north of the city — one of Italy’s great Renaissance monasteries — and the Oltrepò Pavese wine hills to the south. Milan is a short train ride.

The Ponte Coperto is a roofed bridge over the Ticino with a small chapel midway. The medieval original was wrecked in the Second World War and the present bridge is a post-war reconstruction. It leads from the centre to the Borgo Ticino district on the far bank.
The Certosa, a Renaissance Carthusian monastery with an elaborately carved facade, lies just north of the city towards Milan. It can be reached by car or by local train, and a car driven out from a car park outside the ZTL makes the trip easy.
Not for the city, which is compact, flat and a short train ride from Milan. A car helps for the Certosa, the rice fields and the Oltrepò Pavese wine hills to the south.
