Pau’s low-emission zone is one of the narrowest in France. It bars only unclassed vehicles, meaning petrol cars first registered before 1 January 1997 and diesels before 1 January 2001, and only Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 18:00. A barred car caught inside pays EUR 68; lorries, buses and coaches pay EUR 135. Almost any visitor’s car may enter as long as it shows a Crit’Air sticker, so the real plan is simpler: order the sticker, park, then walk the Boulevard des Pyrénées, the balcony promenade facing the mountains below the castle where Henri IV was born.

The zone, the sticker and the centre
The zone reaches beyond the city into Billere, Bizanos, Gelos, Idron, Jurancon, Lons and Mazeres-Lezons, so the city-limit sign is not the edge. Service-Public warns that entering a ZFE without a Crit’Air vignette is fined in the same way as a barred vehicle, so display one. It costs EUR 5.11 delivered for a foreign-registered car from the government site (certificat-air.gouv.fr); order it before the trip, since it comes by post. Then leave the car in a central car park: the castle, the old town and the boulevard are close together, and a funicular links the station to the boulevard. France’s default limits are 50 km/h in town and 0.5 g/l blood alcohol (0.2 g/l for probationary licences).
When the car helps
Keep it for the Pyrenees: the valleys, the resorts and Lourdes, plus the Basque Country and the Jurançon wine slopes to the west.

Winter tyres in France — 2026–27 season
Winter tyres are required in France whenever conditions are wintry — 1 Nov - 31 Mar (mountain law, designated departments).
- Tread minimum: 1.6 mm — France sets no separate winter figure.
- Accepted marking: 3PMSF on all four tyres, or snow chains / snow socks carried for two drive wheels; M+S alone no longer accepted (34 departments, signed communes only)

- Penalty: No sanction in force as of 17 Feb 2026 (penalty decree not yet published). Ignoring a B26 chain sign: 2nd-class fine, up to EUR 150. The obligation is enforceable only where B58/B59 signs are installed.
