Palencia's ZBE only records plates for now. From 31 July 2027 cars with label A or no label are barred Mon-Fri 08:00-20:00 and Sat 09:00-14:00, with a EUR 200 fine.
Palencia switched on its low-emission zone cameras on 1 July 2026, but only to watch. The municipal ordinance gives the city a year of access control without restrictions, during which owners of cars that will later be shut out can be told when sanctions start. That date is 31 July 2027. From then, cars carrying the DGT ‘A’ label or no label cannot enter the centre on weekdays from 08:00 to 20:00 or on Saturdays from 09:00 to 14:00. Sundays and public holidays stay unrestricted.

What a breach will cost
The ordinance treats entering against the restriction as a serious offence under article 76 z.3 of Spain’s traffic law. That means EUR 200, cut to EUR 100 if paid within 20 days, and no licence points. The perimeter streets are excluded: you may drive the ring itself freely, and on-street parking inside the zone is reserved for authorised or exempt vehicles.
Cars on foreign plates carry no DGT sticker. The ordinance admits them when the owner can show emission standards equivalent to an allowed label, through the procedure set in the zone’s operating guidelines. Spain’s general limits apply throughout: 50 km/h in town and 0.5 g/l alcohol.
Two landmarks, one on foot
The cathedral of San Antolín sits inside the zone and is easiest on foot from a car park outside it. Locals call it la Bella Desconocida, the Unknown Beauty. The Cristo del Otero stands on a hill at the city’s edge: a 21-metre statue by Victorio Macho, finished in February 1931, which the city describes as the tallest Christ in Spain. Access to the outside and the viewpoint is free, and the sculptor is buried in the hermitage crypt beneath it.
