Orvieto crowns a sheer plug of volcanic tufa riddled beneath with Etruscan caves, its gold-and-black striped Duomo visible across the Umbrian plain. The town on top is a permit ZTL whose four camera gates keep different hours, and the two on Corso Cavour never switch off, so a hire car without a permit can pick up a EUR 83-332 fine at any time of day. Park at the foot of the cliff near the station and ride the funicular up; the historic centre is entirely walkable.

Park below, ride up the rock
Leave the car in the car parks by the station and the funicular base, and ride up the cliff face to Piazza Cahen. The hilltop is compact; the rock beneath is honeycombed with caves you can tour.

When the car helps
Many arrive by train on the Rome-Florence line. Keep the car for Umbria and Lake Bolsena, driven from the base car park.

Park at the foot of the cliff near the railway station and take the funicular up the rock face to Piazza Cahen, where a short walk or bus reaches the centre and the cathedral. The hilltop town is a ZTL with little parking, so the funicular is the natural way in.
Only with a permit. The comune's rules give each of the four gates its own timetable: Corso Cavour at Teatro Mancinelli and at Piazza della Repubblica are active 24 hours a day; Varco 1 at Piazza Cahen runs 10:00-16:00 and 17:00-22:30 daily from 1 April to 30 September, and in winter only on holidays and during Umbria Jazz Winter; the Via Maitani gate is active except 07:30-09:30. Entering without authorisation is fined EUR 83-332, and since 14 December 2024 repeated entries into the same zone on one day count once.
A butte of tufa, a soft volcanic rock, which the Etruscans and later residents tunnelled into. The cliff is honeycombed with caves, cellars, wells and dovecotes, some open to visitors on underground tours. The sheer drops on every side made it a natural fortress.
In the car parks at the base of the cliff near the station and the funicular. There is some parking on the approach roads, but the funicular from the bottom is the easiest option and drops you at the edge of the old town.
Not for the town; park below, ride up and walk. Orvieto is a stop on the main rail line between Rome and Florence, so many visitors come by train. A car helps for the rest of Umbria and Lake Bolsena.
