Ortona is crowned by the Castello Aragonese, a 15th-century Aragonese fortress standing dramatically on a clifftop promontory above the harbour and the Adriatic, with sweeping sea views. Battered by the 1943 battle and the sea, it has been restored and is a striking landmark and viewpoint. Together with the cathedral of San Tommaso (which claims to hold the relics of the apostle Thomas), it anchors the walkable historic centre on its ridge above the port.
Ortona was the scene of one of the most ferocious battles of the Italian campaign in December 1943, when Canadian troops fought the German defenders street by street through the town in brutal close-quarter combat, earning it the grim nickname the 'Italian Stalingrad' or 'Little Stalingrad'.
