Arrive, collect the car, head for the coast
Most visitors pick up a hire car at the airport or port and drive out. If you stop in town, park outside the ZTL. Since 14 December 2024, repeat entries into the same zone on one day are fined once. Italy’s general rules: 50 km/h in town, 0.05% blood alcohol, zero for drivers under 21 or in their first three years.

Keep the car for the Costa Smeralda and the Maddalena islands, reached by ferry from Palau. Arrive early at popular beaches in summer.

The core gates, including via delle Terme, are active 24 hours; camera enforcement runs round the clock from 1 May to 30 September and on weekend evenings the rest of the year.
