Nantes runs one of France’s lightest low-emission zones. Since 1 January 2025 the rule inside the périphérique ring road bars only vehicles too old to receive any Crit’Air class, broadly those first registered before 1997, and only at weekday peaks, 07:00-09:00 and 16:00-19:00, with public holidays exempt and parking allowed at any hour. A car caught breaking it is fined EUR 68. The former capital of Brittany, with the giant mechanical elephant striding the old shipyards of the Île de Nantes, is easy to explore by tram once parked.

Crit’Air, garage, tram
Any car from 1997 onwards is allowed in; a Crit’Air sticker from certificat-air.gouv.fr costs EUR 5.11 for a foreign-registered car and is worth having for other French cities. Park in an underground garage or park-and-ride and take the tram into the centre around the Château des ducs de Bretagne. France’s limits: 50 km/h in town and 0.05% alcohol, 0.02% on a probationary licence.
When the car helps
Keep it for the Loire estuary and the Atlantic coast, La Baule and the Guérande salt marshes, and the château country upstream, driven out from a park-and-ride.

Winter tyres in France — 2026–27 season
Winter tyres are required in France whenever conditions are wintry — 1 Nov - 31 Mar (mountain law, designated departments).
- Tread minimum: 1.6 mm — France sets no separate winter figure.
- Accepted marking: 3PMSF on all four tyres, or snow chains / snow socks carried for two drive wheels; M+S alone no longer accepted (34 departments, signed communes only)
- Studded tyres: restricted
- Penalty: No sanction in force as of 17 Feb 2026 (penalty decree not yet published). Ignoring a B26 chain sign: 2nd-class fine, up to EUR 150. The obligation is enforceable only where B58/B59 signs are installed.
In French the rule is pneus hiver, and snow chains are chaînes à neige — that is the wording on signs, in hire-car paperwork and on any penalty notice.
