Munich 2026: The Diesel Ban Now Covers the Whole Ring

Munich's Dieselfahrverbot has banned diesel cars of Euro 4 and worse from the Umweltzone since 1 February 2023, inside and including the Mittlerer Ring, and a green Plakette does not exempt them. The effective diesel minimum is therefore **Euro 5**. Petrol cars need the green Plakette. Entering without meeting the standard costs **EUR 100**.
Locally the zone is called Umweltzone München (Germany) — that is the wording on the boundary signs, on the official portal and on any penalty notice, so it is the phrase to search for once you are there.

Can your car enter Munich?
Bavaria’s capital pairs a pedestrian Marienplatz and the vast English Garden with an Umweltzone that every car, foreign ones included, must enter with a green Umweltplakette or risk a EUR 100 fine. Since 2023 a further Dieselfahrverbot has excluded older diesel cars from the entire area inside the Mittlerer Ring, regardless of sticker colour. The simplest route in is a Park and Ride on an S-Bahn or U-Bahn line, which sidesteps the zone altogether and beats driving in during Oktoberfest.

Green sticker, then Park & Ride
The Umweltplakette costs around EUR 10-12 and is permanent; German rentals carry one. Without it inside the ring, the fine is EUR 100. Best of all, park at a Park & Ride on an S-Bahn or U-Bahn station and ride in — fast, and it skips the zone entirely. Germany’s limits apply: 50 km/h urban, 0.05% alcohol (zero under 21 or in the first two years).
Oktoberfest: leave the car parked
In late September the city jams solid around the Theresienwiese, parking vanishes and drink-driving enforcement spikes. The U-Bahn and S-Bahn run frequently to the grounds — use them.
When the car helps
Keep it for the Bavarian Alps, Neuschwanstein and the southern lakes, driven out from a Park & Ride.

Winter tyres in Germany — 2026–27 season
Winter tyres are required in Germany whenever conditions are wintry — Situational (when conditions require: ice, snow, slush, black ice).
- Tread minimum: 1.6 mm — Germany sets no separate winter figure.
- Accepted marking: 3PMSF only — the M+S transitional rule no longer applies to cars (StVZO §36(4))
- Studded tyres: banned
- Penalty: EUR 60 + 1 point; EUR 80 if you obstruct traffic; EUR 75 for the vehicle owner
In German the rule is Winterreifenpflicht, and snow chains are Schneeketten — that is the wording on signs, in hire-car paperwork and on any penalty notice.

Difficult — avoid it. During Oktoberfest in late September and early October, central Munich and the area around the Theresienwiese are extremely congested, parking near the festival is effectively impossible, and drink-driving enforcement is heavy. Use the U-Bahn and S-Bahn, which run frequently to the grounds. If you're staying in the city, leave the car parked for the duration.

Not for the city — the U-Bahn, S-Bahn and trams are excellent and the centre is walkable. A car comes into its own for the Bavarian Alps, the castles like Neuschwanstein, and the lakes south of the city, driven out from a Park & Ride rather than used in the centre.
