Montepulciano’s ZTL changes with the calendar: 24 hours a day from 1 May to 30 September, 08:00-20:00 in April and October, and 08:00-17:00 from November to March, every day of the week. Electric and hybrid cars get no exemption. The practical answer is the same all year: leave the car in a marked car park below the walls and climb on foot to the cellars and Piazza Grande.

Camera gates with lit panels record every plate; red lettering means the zone is active. Tourists can be authorised only to reach short-term accommodation, and may park only in the spaces indicated. The notice goes in before you arrive, through the comune’s online form with SPID or an EU electronic ID. Entering without authorisation costs EUR 83-332 under article 7 of the Codice della Strada, and since 14 December 2024 repeat entries into the same zone on one day count as one violation.

Part of a wider tour
The town gives its name to Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Pienza and Montalcino, in the Val d’Orcia to the west, make an easy loop of hill towns. Pick a driver who is not tasting.
