Ferries one way, ZTL the other
For the ferries to Calabria, follow the port signs. For the centre, either park outside the zone and walk to the cathedral for the noon clock, or buy an hourly or day entry before you cross a gate. Italy’s general limits: 50 km/h in town and 0.05% blood alcohol, zero for drivers under 21 and in their first three years.
When the car helps
Keep it for north-eastern Sicily: Taormina and Etna to the south, the coast and the Nebrodi mountains, driven from a car park or straight off the ferry.

Messina is the main crossing between Sicily and the mainland, with frequent car ferries across the Strait to Villa San Giovanni and Reggio Calabria. Follow the port signs to the terminals and allow boarding time in summer. If you drive from the ferry straight into the centre during the ZTL windows, you enter the zone.
The bell tower of the cathedral, rebuilt after the 1908 earthquake and again after the Second World War, holds a large astronomical clock that stages a mechanical show of moving figures, including a roaring lion and a crowing cockerel, at noon each day. It draws a crowd to the cathedral square.
Use a car park outside the ZTL and walk to the cathedral and the centre, or buy an hourly or day entry if you need to drive in. The gap between 13:30 and 15:30 is outside the ZTL windows. For the ferries, use the port's own access roads.
Many travellers pass through by car to catch or leave the ferries. The centre is walkable once parked. A car is useful for north-eastern Sicily: Taormina and Etna to the south, the Tyrrhenian coast and the Nebrodi mountains.
