Hours by ordinance, street by street
In the most recent ordinance the council has published, n. 269 covering the 2025-26 holiday period, vehicles were allowed into Via San Giuseppe, Piazza della Repubblica and Via SS. Salvatore only 07:30-19:00, Monday to Friday, and into Corso Umberto I only 07:30-10:00 and 12:30-15:00, Monday to Saturday; the rest of the time those streets are closed to vehicles without a permit. Newer ordinances replace older ones, so the sign at the gate is what counts on the day. A slip into the same ZTL twice in one day is one violation under Highway Code art. 198 c.2-bis, in force since 14 December 2024.
Park outside, walk the Kasbah
Walk the old town, the Kasbah, the cathedral square and the Dancing Satyr museum from a car park on the edge. Italy’s limits: 50 km/h in town and 0.05% alcohol, zero for drivers under 21 or in their first three years.
When the car helps
Keep it for western Sicily: the Greek temples of Selinunte and the salt pans and wine country towards Marsala and Trapani.

Mazara's old Arab quarter, a maze of narrow lanes and courtyards that recalls the city's medieval Islamic past and reflects its present-day Tunisian community, many of whom work in the fishing industry. Ceramic art brightens its alleys, all explored on foot.
The Satiro Danzante, an ancient Greek bronze of a satyr in mid-dance, hauled up from the seabed in the nets of a Mazara fishing boat in 1998 and now shown in its own museum in the town centre.
Outside the ZTL, on the edge of the historic centre or near the port, then walk to the Kasbah, the cathedral square and the Satyr museum. If your accommodation is inside the zone, ask it to register your plate before you arrive.
