Marsala gave its name to the fortified wine made here, and it was where Garibaldi and his Thousand landed in 1860 to begin the unification of Italy. The baroque centre along via XI Maggio and via Garibaldi now sits inside a permit-only ZTL, and a car entering without authorisation is fined EUR 83-332, so park outside and walk in through the Porta Garibaldi. Beyond the old town, the coast holds salt pans and windmills facing the Phoenician island of Mozia.

Park outside, walk the baroque centre
The ZTL covers via XI Maggio, via Garibaldi and their side streets, piazza della Repubblica included. Hours are posted at each gate. If a wrong turn takes you through twice in one day, article 198 c.2-bis of the Highway Code counts it once. Italy’s limits: 50 km/h in town and 0.05% alcohol, zero for drivers under 21 or in their first three years.

Keep the car for the wineries, the salt pans and windmills of the Stagnone lagoon, and the boat to Mozia.

Hotels inside can often register your plate. An unauthorised entry costs EUR 83-332, and since 14 December 2024 the same zone on the same day brings one fine, not several. A fortified wine produced around the city since the 18th century, first developed by English merchants, ranging from dry to sweet and used for drinking and cooking. Several historic cantine in and around the city offer tours and tastings in their old cellars.
The coast between Marsala and Trapani is lined with salt pans, shallow basins where seawater evaporates to leave sea salt, dotted with old windmills around the Stagnone lagoon, now partly a nature reserve. In the lagoon lies Mozia, site of an ancient Phoenician city, reached by a short boat ride.
Use a car park outside the ZTL and walk into the baroque centre through the Porta Garibaldi. The historic core is compact once you are on foot.
