Mainz is the city of Johannes Gutenberg, who invented movable-type printing here in the 15th century — the Gutenberg Museum displays original Gutenberg Bibles. It's also a capital of German Fastnacht (carnival), with huge celebrations before Lent, and the heart of the Rheinhessen wine region. The massive red sandstone cathedral and the half-timbered old town are the architectural highlights, all walkable.

Mainz's Fastnacht peaks in the days before Lent (February or early March), culminating in the Rosenmontag parade, when the centre is closed to traffic, packed with crowds and impossible to drive through. If you visit then, don't plan on driving in the centre — use public transport and expect road closures. Outside carnival the city is straightforward.

Use a central garage or a Park & Ride and walk or take public transport in. The old town around the cathedral and the Gutenberg Museum is compact and walkable. Mainz is also linked to Wiesbaden across the Rhine and to Frankfurt by frequent S-Bahn, so it's easy to combine, and parking once is simplest.
