No emission rule applies to a car in Maastricht. The lorry milieuzone expired on 1 January 2026; the zero-emission zone from 1 January 2025 covers business vans and lorries.
Maastricht has never asked anything of a passenger car at its boundary, and since 1 January 2026 it no longer runs its diesel-lorry milieuzone either. What remains is a zero-emission zone for business vans and lorries. For a visitor in a car, the question is where to leave it: the city wants you on the edge, at one of its P+R or P+W car parks, rather than in the medieval centre.

Is There an Environmental Zone in Maastricht?
Not for cars. No sticker, registration or fine applies. The diesel-lorry milieuzone expired on 1 January 2026; the zero-emission zone (since 1 January 2025) binds business vans and lorries.
Park at a distance
The municipality’s policy is parkeren op afstand: large P+R and P+W car parks at the edge of the city for visitors, commuters and students, keeping cars out of the centre and residential streets. From there, walk or take the bus to the Vrijthof.
Dutch basics: 50 km/h in built-up areas, 0.05% alcohol (0.02% for novice drivers), and cyclists everywhere.
Across the borders
Aachen, a short drive east, needs a green Umweltplakette. Belgian Limburg and the Voerstreek hills are sticker-free.
