When the car helps
Keep it for the Baltic coast: Travemünde, the beaches and the Schleswig-Holstein towns, driven from a central car park. Hamburg is a short train ride away.

Lübeck's emblem: a twin-towered late-medieval brick gate at the western entrance to the old town, once part of the fortifications and now a museum. It appeared on the old 50-mark banknote. You pass it walking from the station side onto the island.
The UNESCO-listed old town on an island in the river Trave: brick Gothic churches including the Marienkirche, the medieval town hall, gabled merchant houses and hidden courtyards (Gänge und Höfe). It is the home of Niederegger marzipan and of the Buddenbrookhaus, linked to Thomas Mann's novel. The island is compact and best explored on foot.
Use a multi-storey or a car park at the edge of the island old town and walk in. The centre is compact and many streets are narrow, so the car is not needed once parked. Lübeck is also an easy train ride from Hamburg.
