Park and walk to the base
Park in a central car park and walk the centre and the harbour, or drive to Lorient La Base at Keroman. The German navy built the bunkers in the Second World War to shelter U-boats. Inside a bay of bunker K2 is the museum of the Flore S645, a French submarine in service from 1964 to 1989 that opened to visitors in 2010. France’s limits: 50 km/h in towns, 0.5 g/l alcohol, 0.2 g/l for probationary drivers.
August: the Festival Interceltique
For ten days in early August the Festival Interceltique takes over the city; in 2026 it ran from 31 July to 9 August. Book rooms early and expect parking to be scarce.
When the car helps
Keep it for the south Brittany coast, the Gulf of Morbihan and its megaliths. Groix is reached by ferry.

Winter tyres in France — 2026–27 season
Winter tyres are required in France whenever conditions are wintry — 1 Nov - 31 Mar (mountain law, designated departments).
