Limburg an der Lahn hides one of Germany’s best-preserved half-timbered old towns beneath a startling sight: the seven-towered Georgsdom, set directly on a rock above the river. The town’s Umweltzone came late, on 31 January 2018, and went straight to the strictest stage, so only the green Umweltplakette is accepted and a car without one risks a EUR 100 fine. Park on the edge of the centre and walk up through the lanes to the cathedral, a short detour worth making on the A3 between Frankfurt and Cologne.

Green sticker, then park and walk the old town
The zone runs 24/7. Diesel cars qualify for the green sticker from Euro 4 (or Euro 3 with a particulate filter); petrol cars need only a regulated catalytic converter. The sticker costs around EUR 5-15 and stays on the car; German hire cars normally carry one. From 1 October 2026 a car with a German E-plate, or a foreign EV with the blue E badge, needs no sticker. Germany’s other rules for the drive in: 50 km/h in built-up areas and 0.5 per mille alcohol, with zero for drivers under 21 and in their probationary period.
When the car helps
Keep it for the Lahn valley, the Westerwald and Taunus hills, and the route toward Frankfurt or the Rhine, driven from a car park on the edge. If you arrive by train, Limburg Süd is on the high-speed line.

The Limburger Dom, also called the Georgsdom, is a late-Romanesque and early-Gothic church with seven towers and a painted exterior, set on a rock above the river Lahn and the old town. Its position makes it one of the most photographed cathedral settings in Germany, and it is reached on foot through the old town.
Use a car park on the edge of the old town, then walk in. The lanes of half-timbered houses climbing to the cathedral are best on foot, and the green sticker applies if you drive into the zone.
Not for the old town, which is compact and walkable, and Limburg Süd station is on the high-speed line between Frankfurt and Cologne. A car helps for the Lahn valley and the Westerwald and Taunus hills around the town.
