A car without the green Umweltplakette risks a EUR 100 fine across Leipzig’s Umweltzone, which has covered about 62% of the city since March 2011; foreign plates are included, and German hire cars carry the sticker already. The compact centre traces the line of the old city walls and is the same ground where the 1989 Monday marches around the Nikolaikirche helped end East Germany. Park at the edge and walk or take a tram to the Bach sites.

The sticker, and its end date
The Umweltplakette costs EUR 6 at the city’s vehicle registration office; other issuers usually charge more. Without it the fine is EUR 100. From 1 October 2026, a car with a German E-plate, or a foreign-registered electric car with the blue E badge, needs no sticker. The city plans to lift the zone in its current form with the 2027/2028 clean air plan update; until then it applies. Germany’s limits: 50 km/h in towns, 0.05% alcohol, and zero for drivers under 21 or in their probationary period.
A walkable centre
The Thomaskirche (Bach’s church), the Gewandhaus, the Nikolaikirche and the covered Passagen arcades are a short stroll apart. Park in a garage or at a Park & Ride and walk or ride in.
When the car helps
Keep it for Saxony: Dresden and the Neuseenland lakes south of the city.

Winter tyres in Germany — 2026–27 season
Winter tyres are required in Germany whenever conditions are wintry — Situational (when conditions require: ice, snow, slush, black ice).
- Tread minimum: 1.6 mm — Germany sets no separate winter figure.
- Accepted marking: 3PMSF only — the M+S transitional rule no longer applies to cars (StVZO §36(4))
- Studded tyres: banned
- Penalty: EUR 60 + 1 point; EUR 80 if you obstruct traffic; EUR 75 for the vehicle owner
In German the rule is Winterreifenpflicht, and snow chains are Schneeketten — that is the wording on signs, in hire-car paperwork and on any penalty notice.

The city says it will lift the zone in its current form when the clean air plan is updated in 2027/2028. Until then it stays in force, so the sticker is still needed.
The Thomaskirche, where Bach was cantor and is buried; the Gewandhaus concert hall; the Nikolaikirche, focal point of the 1989 Monday demonstrations; and covered shopping arcades such as the Mädler Passage. All are a short walk apart in the centre.
Not for the city: the centre is walkable and trams and the S-Bahn cover the rest. A car helps for Saxony beyond, such as Dresden and the Neuseenland lakes south of the city, driven out from a Park & Ride.
