A private car of any age, fuel or Euro class can drive into Leiden without a sticker or registration. The city never had a passenger-car milieuzone, and the diesel-lorry zone it once ran lapsed when Leiden’s zero-emission zone for business vans and lorries began on 1 January 2025. That leaves the visit to the canals: Rembrandt’s birthplace, the country’s oldest university and the Hortus Botanicus, where some of the first Dutch tulips were grown. Park on the edge and walk or cycle the compact centre.

Park, then walk or cycle
The centre is small, canal-lined and busy with bikes, so a garage or P+R on the edge works better than hunting for a street space. From there it is a short walk to the Burcht, the Hortus Botanicus and the museums. Dutch drink-drive limits are 0.5 g/l blood alcohol, and 0.2 g/l for drivers in their first five years of holding a licence.
When the car helps
Keep it for the bulb fields, the Keukenhof in spring and the coast at Katwijk and Noordwijk. Amsterdam and The Hague are a short train ride away.
