Le Mans is known worldwide for its June endurance race, yet the part of town worth parking for is the Cité Plantagenêt, a hilltop quarter of half-timbered houses around the Cathedral of Saint-Julien, hemmed in by the Gallo-Roman city wall. No emission rule stands between you and it: the city never switched on a ZFE, and in July 2024 the French State confirmed Le Mans was not required to run one.

Is There an Environmental Zone in Le Mans?
No. No boundary, no Crit’Air check and no low-emission fine apply to a car in Le Mans today. The national register of French ZFEs does not list the city among the zones in force. The Crit’Air vignette only matters if your route continues into a French city whose zone is active.
Park below, walk the walled quarter
The Cité Plantagenêt is steep and largely pedestrian: park at the foot of the hill and walk up to the cathedral and the half-timbered lanes. France’s general rules apply: 50 km/h in town and 0.05% blood alcohol.
The circuit
The Circuit des 24 Heures and its museum sit south of the city with their own parking. During the June 24 Hours race the area is packed; follow the event’s traffic plan.
When the car helps
Keep it for the Sarthe countryside and the Loire valley to the south, driven out from a car park.

Winter tyres in France — 2026–27 season
Winter tyres are required in France whenever conditions are wintry — 1 Nov - 31 Mar (mountain law, designated departments).
- Tread minimum: 1.6 mm — France sets no separate winter figure.
- Accepted marking: 3PMSF on all four tyres, or snow chains / snow socks carried for two drive wheels; M+S alone no longer accepted (34 departments, signed communes only)
- Studded tyres: restricted
- Penalty: No sanction in force as of 17 Feb 2026 (penalty decree not yet published). Ignoring a B26 chain sign: 2nd-class fine, up to EUR 150. The obligation is enforceable only where B58/B59 signs are installed.
In French the rule is pneus hiver, and snow chains are chaînes à neige — that is the wording on signs, in hire-car paperwork and on any penalty notice.

Use a car park at the foot of the old town, then walk up into the Cité Plantagenêt. For the circuit and museum, use their parking to the south of the city. During race week expect congestion and follow the event signage.
