Las Palmas 2026: Alcaravaneras ZBE Pilot Still Not Running

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has picked the spot for its first low-emission zone, Las Alcaravaneras, as a pilot that could later spread to areas such as Arenales. What it does not have yet is an approved ordinance: the operating hours will only be set once that ordinance passes, and until then no DGT label is checked on any car. Air-quality and noise sensors for the zone began going in during April 2026.

Where things stand
The council has run a public participation process for the ordinance. The Canary Islands government’s summary gives the planned penalty as EUR 200, which can rise by up to 30% for repeat offences, but nothing is enforced while the ordinance is pending. A hire car collected at the airport needs no sticker for the city.
Park, then walk the beach and the old town
The city’s official tourism site points visitors to Las Canteras beach and to the historic quarters of Vegueta, home of the Casa de Colón, and Triana. All of them are walking territory, so leave the car in a garage. Spain’s general rules: 50 km/h only on urban streets with two or more lanes each way (30 or 20 on smaller streets) and 0.5 g/l alcohol.
The car’s real job: the island
Keep a hire car for Gran Canaria beyond the capital: the Maspalomas dunes in the south and the mountain villages of the interior.
