Can your car enter Kiel?
Kiel has no Umweltzone and never has had one: the Umweltbundesamt’s register of German low-emission zones, which covers all 58 ever created, has no entry for the city. No green Plakette is needed and no emissions fine can be issued. What shapes a drive here is the harbour, because the ferries to Norway and Sweden leave from quays in the middle of town.

Is There a Low Emission Zone in Kiel?

Ferries: know your quay
The Port of Kiel splits its passenger traffic between three places. Color Line sails daily to Oslo from the Norwegenkai, the only direct ferry link between Germany and Norway. Stena Line runs to Gothenburg from the Schwedenkai. Both quays sit in the city harbour, so check-in traffic shares the roads with the centre. DFDS sails to Klaipeda in Lithuania from the Ostuferhafen on the east bank of the fjord. Each terminal has its own parking; follow the signs for the quay, not for the centre.
Kiel Week
Kieler Woche is the city’s sailing and summer festival in June, with regattas on the fjord and stages along the waterfront; the 2027 edition runs from 19 to 27 June. Expect closed streets near the Kiellinie and full car parks that week.
Park and walk
Outside festival week, park in a central garage and walk: the shopping streets, the harbour and the Kiellinie promenade along the fjord are close together. Germany’s national limits apply, 50 km/h in town and a 0.05% alcohol limit.
When the car helps
Keep it for the Baltic beaches of Schleswig-Holstein and for the Kiel Canal, which the port describes as the world’s busiest artificial waterway; its eastern locks are at Holtenau on Kiel’s northern edge.

Winter tyres in Germany — 2026–27 season
Winter tyres are required in Germany whenever conditions are wintry — Situational (when conditions require: ice, snow, slush, black ice).
- Tread minimum: 1.6 mm — Germany sets no separate winter figure.
- Accepted marking: 3PMSF only — the M+S transitional rule no longer applies to cars (StVZO §36(4))

In German the rule is Winterreifenpflicht, and snow chains are Schneeketten — that is the wording on signs, in hire-car paperwork and on any penalty notice.
