Jaén 2026: Its Low Emission Zone Still Isn't in Force

No zone applies in Jaén yet. A ZBE was announced, but its ordinance was never finally approved, so any car may enter, no DGT label is checked and no penalty can be issued.
On paper Jaén owes Spain a low emission zone, since the 2021 climate law requires one in every municipality above 50,000 people. In practice the city announced a scheme and then stopped short of approving the ordinance, so in 2026 no vehicle is restricted, no DGT label is looked at and no fine can be issued. The planning you need is about gradients, not emissions: the old town climbs steeply towards the castle hill.

Park low, climb on foot
Leave the car in a garage at the foot of the historic centre and walk up. The Baños Árabes, built in the 11th century beneath the Palacio de Villardompardo, spread over 450 square metres and are probably the largest Arab baths open to visitors in Spain. The cathedral and the Santa Catalina castle on the ridge above complete the climb.

Inside Jaén the limit follows the street layout: 30 km/h with one lane each way, 50 km/h with two or more, and 20 km/h on single-level streets. The general alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l in blood.
Out into the province
The car comes into its own east of the city, on the drive through olive groves to the Renaissance towns of Úbeda and Baeza.
