Locally the zone is called Zona a Traffico Limitato Imperia (Italy) — that is the wording on the boundary signs, on the official portal and on any penalty notice, so it is the phrase to search for once you are there.

Imperia isn’t one town but two, merged in 1923 along the Impero stream: the working port of Oneglia, historic home of Italy’s olive oil trade, and Porto Maurizio, whose hilltop Parasio quarter is the more photogenic. One fine per day, not per gate
If you stray through the same ZTL more than once in a day, article 198 c.2-bis of the Highway Code, in force since 14 December 2024, counts it as a single violation. Staying inside the zone? Ask the hotel to register your plate before you arrive.
Park outside, walk the hilltop old quarter
Park below the Parasio in Porto Maurizio and walk up its lanes, or walk Oneglia’s port. Italy’s limits: 50 km/h in town and 0.05% alcohol, zero for drivers under 21 or in their first three years.
When the car helps
Keep it for the Riviera dei Fiori: Sanremo, the coastal villages, the olive hinterland and the French border. The coastal cycle path is a good car-free option.

Park below the Parasio and walk up its lanes, or use the car parks along Oneglia's seafront for the port and the olive-oil heritage. Leaving the car outside the restricted streets and walking is the simple approach.
The stretch of the western Ligurian coast around Imperia and Sanremo, named for its flower growing and mild climate. It has beaches, resorts, hill villages and a coastal cycle path on a former railway line.
