Herrenberg's landmark is its collegiate church, the Stiftskirche, a large late-Gothic church standing prominently on the hillside above the town, visible across the surrounding Gäu plateau, which earned it the affectionate nickname the 'Lantern of the Gäu' (Laterne des Gäu). Inside it has notable medieval art, and its tower houses the German Bell Museum (Deutsches Glockenmuseum), with historic bells. The church and the climb up to it through the old town are the highlight of a visit, on foot.
Herrenberg has a charming, steeply terraced old town of half-timbered houses (Fachwerk) climbing the hillside beneath the Stiftskirche, with narrow stepped lanes, a market square with a town hall, and old fountains. It sits on the edge of the Schönbuch nature park, a large forest popular for walking and cycling. The compact, picturesque centre is best explored on foot, a pleasant stop in the Gäu region south of Stuttgart.
