Winter tyres in Finland — 2026–27 season
Winter tyres are required in Finland whenever conditions are wintry — 1 Nov - 31 Mar (can be extended by conditions).
- Legal winter tread minimum: 3 mm — not the 1.6 mm figure most guides quote, which is the year-round minimum.
- Accepted marking: 3PMSF required on non-studded winter tyres (since 1 Dec 2024)
- Studded tyres: allowed
In Finnish the rule is talvirenkaat, and snow chains are lumiketjut — that is the wording on signs, in hire-car paperwork and on any penalty notice.

Helsinki has an excellent tram and metro network, and the compact centre around Senate Square, the market and the Esplanadi park is easily covered on foot. Street parking is metered and limited, so a garage is the simplest option, leaving the car while you explore by tram and ferry.
By ferry from the market square harbour. Suomenlinna, the UNESCO sea fortress spread across several islands, is a short public ferry ride and a popular half-day trip — no car needed. Larger ferries cross the Gulf of Finland to Tallinn in Estonia in about two hours, a common day trip. Both leave from the central waterfront, walkable from the centre.
Finland's rules: a 0.05% alcohol limit, a 50 km/h urban limit, dipped headlights required at all times day and night, and mandatory winter tyres in winter conditions (roughly December to March, when studded tyres are common). Fines for speeding in Finland are famously income-based and can be very large. Watch for trams, which have priority, and for cyclists.
