Heidelberg has scrapped its environmental zone — no emission sticker, permit or low-emission penalty applies today.
Can your car enter Heidelberg?
Heidelberg’s ruined red castle looks down on the long pedestrian Hauptstrasse running through the narrow Altstadt. The city abolished its Umweltzone on 1 March 2023, so no green Umweltplakette or low-emission fine applies here any more. Park in a garage near Bismarckplatz and ride the Bergbahn funicular up to the castle.

Is There an Environmental Zone in Heidelberg?
No. Heidelberg abolished its Umweltzone on 1 March 2023, so no sticker, permit or low-emission fine applies to your car today. The Umweltbundesamt federal register lists the zone as withdrawn.
Other cities nearby still enforce one: Darmstadt, Pforzheim, Ludwigsburg and Stuttgart require the green sticker, with a EUR 100 fine. From 1 October 2026, cars with a German E-plate, or foreign electric cars displaying the blue E badge, no longer need the sticker in any German zone.
Park at the edge, walk the Hauptstrasse
The old town centres on the pedestrian Hauptstrasse; cars have little place in it. Park in a garage near Bismarckplatz, the Kornmarkt or the river, and walk in. Germany’s limits apply: 50 km/h in town unless signs say otherwise, and 0.05% alcohol, with zero for drivers under 21 or in their probationary period.
Up to the castle by funicular
The castle is reached by the Bergbahn funicular from the old town, or by a steep walk, not by car. The funicular climbs on to the Königstuhl for the views.
When the car helps
Keep it for the Neckar valley, its castles and the Odenwald hills, driven out from a garage.

Winter tyres in Germany — 2026–27 season
Winter tyres are required in Germany whenever conditions are wintry — Situational (when conditions require: ice, snow, slush, black ice).
- Tread minimum: 1.6 mm — Germany sets no separate winter figure.
- Accepted marking: 3PMSF only — the M+S transitional rule no longer applies to cars (StVZO §36(4))

In German the rule is Winterreifenpflicht, and snow chains are Schneeketten — that is the wording on signs, in hire-car paperwork and on any penalty notice.

Barely. The Altstadt is built around the Hauptstrasse, a long pedestrian shopping street, with narrow side lanes and limited access. Park in a garage at the edge of the old town, near Bismarckplatz or along the river, and explore on foot.
Take the Bergbahn funicular from the old town, or walk up the steep path. The castle sits on the hillside above the Altstadt, and the funicular continues higher up the Königstuhl for the views. Park in town and go up by funicular or on foot.
Use one of the garages around the edge of the Altstadt, near Bismarckplatz, the Kornmarkt or along the Neckar, then walk into the pedestrian centre. Street parking in the old town is very limited.
Not for the town, which is compact, walkable and on the rail network. A car helps for the Neckar valley, its castles and the Odenwald hills. If your route continues to Darmstadt, Pforzheim, Ludwigsburg or Stuttgart, those cities still run Umweltzonen, so the green sticker is needed there.
