Heidelberg’s ruined red castle looks down on one of Europe’s longest pedestrian streets, the Hauptstrasse, running through the narrow Altstadt. The city abolished its Umweltzone on 1 March 2023, so no green Umweltplakette or low-emission fine applies here any more. Park in a garage near Bismarckplatz and ride the Bergbahn funicular up to the castle.

Park at the edge, walk the Hauptstrasse
The old town centres on the pedestrian Hauptstrasse; cars have little place in it. Get the Umweltplakette (around EUR 10-12, permanent — German rentals carry one), park in a garage near Bismarckplatz, the Kornmarkt or the river, and walk in. Germany’s limits: 50 km/h urban, 0.05% alcohol.
Up to the castle by funicular
The castle is reached by the Bergbahn funicular from the old town or a steep walk — not by car. The funicular climbs on to the Königstuhl for the views.
When the car helps
Keep it for the Neckar valley, the castles and the Odenwald hills, driven out from a garage.

Winter tyres in Germany — 2026–27 season
Winter tyres are required in Germany whenever conditions are wintry — Situational (when conditions require: ice, snow, slush, black ice).
- Tread minimum: 1.6 mm — Germany sets no separate winter figure.
- Accepted marking: 3PMSF only — the M+S transitional rule no longer applies to cars (StVZO §36(4))
- Studded tyres: banned
- Penalty: EUR 60 + 1 point; EUR 80 if you obstruct traffic; EUR 75 for the vehicle owner
In German the rule is Winterreifenpflicht, and snow chains are Schneeketten — that is the wording on signs, in hire-car paperwork and on any penalty notice.

Barely. The Altstadt is built around the Hauptstrasse, one of Europe's longest pedestrian shopping streets, with narrow side lanes and limited access. It's made for walking. Park in a garage at the edge of the old town — there are several near the Bismarckplatz end and along the river — and explore on foot. The compact old town runs from there to the castle hill.
Take the Bergbahn funicular from the old town, or walk up the steep path — not your car. The castle sits on the hillside above the Altstadt and the approach is pedestrian. The funicular continues higher up the Königstuhl hill for the views. Park down in the town and go up by funicular or on foot; there's no convenient castle parking for visitors.
Use one of the garages around the edge of the Altstadt — near Bismarckplatz, the Kornmarkt or along the Neckar — then walk into the pedestrian centre. Street parking in the old town is very limited. The garages put you within easy reach of the Hauptstrasse, the old bridge and the funicular up to the castle.
Not for the town — it's compact, walkable and on the rail network. A car helps for the Neckar valley upstream, the castles and the Odenwald hills, driven out from a garage. For Heidelberg itself, park once and walk the old town and the old bridge on foot.
