Winter tyres are required in Germany whenever conditions are wintry — Situational (when conditions require: ice, snow, slush, black ice).

The Rote Faden (Red Thread) is a red line painted on the pavement that leads visitors on a roughly 4-kilometre self-guided walking tour past 36 of Hanover's main sights — the old town, the New Town Hall, the opera and more. You just follow the line, optionally with a guide booklet. It's a clever way to see the centre on foot, reinforcing that you park once and walk the core.
Hanover hosts some of the world's largest trade fairs (such as Hannover Messe), and during these the city is extremely busy — hotels fill, traffic around the Messe grounds and the centre is heavy, and parking is at a premium. If you're visiting during a fair, use the S-Bahn and trams rather than driving, and book parking ahead. Outside fair times the city is much quieter.
Use a central garage or a Park & Ride on the S-Bahn or tram network and ride in. The centre is compact and walkable (just follow the Red Thread), and public transport covers the wider city well. Park & Ride is especially wise during trade fairs, when central parking is scarce and expensive.
