Grenoble is a city you drive to and then stop driving in. The park-and-ride car parks at the tram stops cost nothing as long as you leave with a tram ticket validated within the last hour, the flat centre is served by trams and cycle lanes, and the Bastille cable car lifts you from the old town to the fort without a road in sight.
The low-emission zone is softer than its reputation. For cars it applies only Monday to Friday, 07:00 to 19:00, refuses Crit’Air 3, 4, 5 and unclassified vehicles, and until 30 June 2027 Grenoble-Alpes Métropole issues no fine for the vehicle’s class. Park and ride
The P+R network ringing the metropole is the easy answer to both traffic and parking:
- Entry is free. At the exit you present a TAG ticket validated less than an hour earlier, or a season ticket, and the barrier opens at no charge.
- From Lyon and the A48, P+R Esplanade on the route de Lyon is the first one you meet, on the tram line into the centre.
- From the south, P+R Pont de Claix sits at the end of the line.
- They open from early morning until after midnight, but not round the clock, so a car left late at night may be locked in.
The Bastille and the old town
The cable car’s glass bubbles leave from the Quai Stéphane Jay on the Isère and climb to the Bastille fort, with the Vercors, Chartreuse and Belledonne ranges around the city and, on a clear day, Mont Blanc. The old town around Place Grenette and Place Saint-André is a short walk from the cable car station and from the tram.
Into the mountains
The car comes back into play for the ranges that surround the basin: the Vercors plateau to the west, the Chartreuse to the north, Chamrousse and the Oisans resorts to the east. From 1 November to 31 March, the mountain communes of Isère fall under the Loi Montagne: four 3PMSF winter tyres, or chains or snow socks carried in the car. M+S marking alone is no longer accepted. National rules apply on the approach roads: 50 km/h in town, 80 km/h on rural roads unless signed 90, 130 km/h on motorways, 0.05% blood alcohol. See the France driving guide.

Winter tyres in France — 2026–27 season
Winter tyres are required in France whenever conditions are wintry — 1 Nov - 31 Mar (mountain law, designated departments).
- Tread minimum: 1.6 mm — France sets no separate winter figure.
- Accepted marking: 3PMSF on all four tyres, or snow chains / snow socks carried for two drive wheels; M+S alone no longer accepted (34 departments, signed communes only)
- Studded tyres: restricted
- Penalty: No sanction in force as of 17 Feb 2026 (penalty decree not yet published). Ignoring a B26 chain sign: 2nd-class fine, up to EUR 150. The obligation is enforceable only where B58/B59 signs are installed.
In French the rule is pneus hiver, and snow chains are chaînes à neige — that is the wording on signs, in hire-car paperwork and on any penalty notice.

Not for your car's Crit'Air class: Grenoble-Alpes Métropole extended its no-fine period to every vehicle until 30 June 2027. Driving with no Crit'Air vignette on the windscreen is a separate offence and is still a EUR 68 fine. The car rules only apply Monday to Friday, 07:00 to 19:00.
The park-and-ride car parks sit at tram stops and bus hubs around the metropole. Entry is free; at the exit barrier you show a TAG ticket validated less than an hour before (or a season ticket), and the parking costs nothing. They open from early morning to after midnight, so check the closing time before an evening out.
P+R Esplanade, on the route de Lyon at the northern entrance to the city, is the first you reach from the A48 and sits on the tram line into the centre. From the south, Pont de Claix is the equivalent at the end of the line.
By the Bastille cable car, whose spherical cabins (les Bulles) leave from the Quai Stéphane Jay beside the old town and climb to the fort above the Isère. There is no reason to drive; from a P+R the tram reaches the old town, and the cable car station is a short walk.
